Too Noisey

I just bought a 2005 6.0 PSD well maintained truck from a coworker which is an awesome truck. To improve MPG the previous owner removed the CAT, installed a K&N air system, and replaced the muffler with a straight pipe system. It worked but it's loud especially the hissing air noise out of the tail pipe. It sounds like a jet taking off. In my younger days I'd say....cool! But todat I'd like to quiet it down just a bit. Is there anything I can add that might help but not destroy the inceased MPG he was able to accomplish. Thanks. First post but have read a lot.

Why does everyone just assume that adding a freer flowing exhaust automatically increases fuel mileage and power when in a lot of cases the opposite happens. Ditch the K&N for sure but the cost of putting a stock exhaust system back on will negate the relative fuel savings so you might just have a new muffler put on instead.

Put a 4 inch Magnaflow on mine, nice and quiet but spools up much quicker. About 200 pounds lighter than the stocker. As others have said, the stock air filter is better than the K&N.

I have a 4" stainless out of the turbo back , magnaflo muffler, no kitty its not to loud but does hiss or whistle a little depending on the turbo. 16-18mpg around town 22-24 mpg on the freeway. I love the sound of this exhaust setup.

+1 on the air intake get rid of the k&n

do you have gauges in it

welcome to fte lots of info here and good people to help you out

Agree on the remove K&N - great for gassers, bad filtering for turbos,
and if you've read a lot, you've probably seen my normal response
get a Walker BTM muffler from your local napa or parts store for about $60 - mellow sound and lifetime warranty...
