Electrical system problem
Got a problem. My 1988 F-150 w/300 I-6 and manual transmission started fine early this morning. After using the vehicles battery as auxiliary power for a different operation, I tried starting it again. The relay just "clicked". I checked an earlier thread and went through the electrical system from battery to starter, cleaning and tightening each connection. I also charged the battery to full charge. When I tried to start the truck after all of this, it started fine. The problem I have is when I turn the key to the "on" position, the only light that lights up is the battery light. I don't get the ABS, ENGINE, CHECK ENGINE, SEAT BELT, BRAKE, REAR ANTILOCK, 4X4, OR LOW RANGE lights like I did before during start up. Also, once running, the gauges don't work (I get absolutely no voltage reading, but the alternator is working), the 4X4 system works but the lights don't, and the rear brakes lock up.
I pulled all of the fuses under the dash, checked and replaced. I checked all of the fuse links under the hood, too. They look fine. I couldn't find a "master" switch or under-hood fuse box.
I'm stumped!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!!
Your problem sounds like the dash ground, since the ENG light is connected directly to the computer, and if it wasn't working, the engine wouldn't run.
