Advance AP sells the whole shaft for $70 or the rings for $15. I don't know how Ford operates but GM warranty has a list of op codes and if what you are replacing is in the list of op codes for whatever warranty you have then it's covered. If a particular part such as a tone ring is replaceable you can't just replace the whole axle, the dealer won't get paid by GM in this case I suspect Ford operates similarly. I'm sure when the service manual was orignally written it was never intended that the ring would go bad so it says the ring is not serviceable, but if it turns out to be a high failure item then to save the company money they will find a cheap way to fix it, such as replacing the ring instead of a whole shaft, happens that way for GM all the time. BTW those rings begin to rust between the cv joint and ring and the force of the rust over time is what makes them break.
chit happens and on these techno nightmare new cars { like the wifes new gm van SHE bought ! } this fancy stuff that makes them so nice to drive , efficient etc. has a tendency to be a weak point and break usually for no apparent reason . she just had a similar problem with hers in the big ol' snow storm a bit ago , and the chevy dealer warrantied it and sent her on the way . no matter , warrantied or not i would've paid to have it fixed as that's just part and parcel of owning any car{ i do not work on any of her or the kid's new vehicles period !} . hades i find way's to break things that shouldn't on my old ones , and just managed to warp the hades { actually a child driving it hard and playing race car driver LOL !!! } out of my 95 birds rotors so .... and now wwere spending 200 buck for four slotted and drilled ones . so as i said in another thread ... you play you gotta pay .
The franchised dealer, who is not owned or operated by FMC is expected to be the only interface between the customer and manufacturer.
FoMoCo does in fact own some dealerships. This is known in the biz as a DD (dealer development) store.
Ford either acquires the dealership from someone who wants to sell, or takes over a dealership after cancelling the franchise (usually because the owner was a crook).
Then Ford places an overseer in charge of the whole tamale. The overseer (usually a minority) ends up buying it. Most DD stores operate on a limited budget.

She must have purchased this extended warranty when she bought the car and chose the $100 deductible. If what she goes in for is covered under powertrain it won't cost her a dime because powertrain warranty is already 5/100k.
