There are a couple ways to skin this cat. The easiest way is to just unplug the wiring harness from the dinger box. Takes all of 5 seconds once you find the dinger module. This will stop any and all dinging obviously.
If you'd like to have the ding still work if you leave the headlights on there is another option that's pretty easy. The pics I took are with the upper plastic cover on the steering column removed but you can get it done by just removing the screws holding the 2 plastic covers together and pulling the lower one down a bit.
Here's the offending wire in its original location.
A light tug on the plastic connector and it pops right off.
Tape it up. If you wanted you could snip the contact or the whole plug off.
I think it'd be easier to nip the wire where it runs to the connector to the chime box...may be easier than popping the column covers.
One other note - the chime box in our XL only had the "key in" function - no reminder when the lights were left on. Best as I can tell, this was by design as the chime box did NOT have the #1 pin, for the "lights on" input signal...Fixed that by building my own "lights on" buzzer box.
I had the cover off already for another project so that's why I snapped the pics and did the short write-up. First thing I did when I bought this OBS was to unplug the chime module
I know some trucks had a buzz box and some have chimes... mine has the chime. I haven't looked at the wiring diagram or tested the plug to see if there are separate wires for the different warning chimes or not.

Sorta wish I didn't remove my module and smash it on the ground, would have liked to do the 'head light' portion of this mod. oh well, live and learn. thanks for the write up though

Robb: It's pretty easy to make a headlight chime module. a couple resistors, a transistor, and a 'buzzer' from radio shack will do it. The buzzer I picked is a bit annoying but effective and cost ~ $3. The rest of the components were in my stash but wouldn't cost more than a half gallon of diesel. I figured it would pay for itself if it keeps the wife from having to call for a jump after leaving the lights (towing) just once.
What does the door dinger sound like? The PO deleted mine, I guess. Didn't notice until now, but mine doesn't ding at all when either the key is in or the headlights are on.

Okay, I was just making sure that it wasn't a godawful buzz or something worse. Would it be possible for me to hook it up for the headlights but not for the key in?

Thanks Makomark for the post. I don't really care enough about the dinger to build one... i'm now 'programed' to check my lights when I jump out of my truck. Tired to send you some rep, still in jail...

Buck: if the module is still there, it should be located under the lower portion of the dash board, between the accelerator pedal and the transmission hump. Smaller than a pack of cigarettes, with an odd shaped connector with ~ 7 pins. if you need one, try the junkyard as the OEM parts are not cheaply priced.
