here in the local thrifty magazine someone has listed a 351c with four barrel heads..and saids it is 330 horsepower..selling it for 400 dollars complete..is that a good price if it is in good to fair shape?..i never had one of these motors and was just courious what to look for and pricing...thank you.
$400 doesn't sound out of line if everything is on the up and up. when you said complete, i take that for assembled? it would be nice to hear it run but probably not. take a look at the oil on the stick if there is any in it. pull the plugs and look at them good. while the plugs are out a quick compression test would be a good idea if it has a starter, or you could bring one and a battery. remember to hold the throttle open while cranking for compression if the carb is on it. front brackets may be important if you don't have them, and check all the bolt holes for stripped holes or broken off bolts. info on the components would be nice to know so you have an idea of how it's going to run, like what cam, lift and duration, what pistons, cast or forged, compression ratio so you know what gas it will need to run. i'm very wary of engines that are not covered well or not sealed up for storage.spark plugs out and an open carb or manifold covered with dust and more is a red flag for me.(a buddy bought a "good" engine with a rat hotel in it, i MADE him open it. we cleaned it out and all's well) as far as i'm concerned, an engine found like that has to be opened up and checked out. not a deal breaker, but it'll cost you gaskets. and on that note i would reseal the engine and put a new timing chain before installing it anyway. and while the pan is off check the bearings, it's a lot easier while it's out! how complete is "complete"? wing nut to oil drain plug and flywheel to fan blades?
