Go to your User Control Panel (User CP) upper left hand corner, scroll down to Settings & Options, Edit Avatar. Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 120 by 120 pixels or 640.0 KB.
You can use an outside source on the web to store your pictures such as photobucket or use your gallery here on FTE.

thanks for the info! and the 25 post thing must be it. i went to the edit avatar and tried to upload my resized photo, now it looks like there should be an avatar by my name but it is just blank. im about to just give up ha

You have to have 25 posts before you can edit anything and when you get to 25 the server will reset each night so you will have to wait until the next day, look in the cp and go to edit my signiture and the avatar setting and you should be able to put your stuff in
