i took a 250 mile trip today. i drove down some very rough roads that rattled the heck out of me and the pickup. after letting it set for about four hours i went and headed home. i noticed that the oil pressure was running higher than usual. right now it is on the line at the high end of "normal". is this alright to run it at?
it stayed at that point the whole trip home and only dropped slightly when going down hills. it jumps to that point at start up now and will not go any higher. i have 5,000 miles on since an overhaul. what is the normal operating pressure for this engine? (EFI 302....truck listed below) any and all info is appreciated.
High pressure probably means that there's a blockage inside the engine's oil journals, and that much of the engine may be starved for oil. Do you have any secondary indications, like rod knock, valve clatter, or more rumbling/grinding than normal?
OE gauges aren't known for accuracy or precision, so don't assume your pressure is actually higher just because the needle has moved. Get a cheap aftermarket mechanical oil pressure gauge (as little as $8 from some places) and see what you really have.
