5.4 gurus

I just picked up a 2000 F-250 with a 5.4 manual. I have read many times people say to not be afraid of rpms. My truck dosen't have a red line. My tach goes up to 7k, but there is not indication where the redline should be. I cruise at about 2200 rpms (at 65 mph). Is that a good place to be or should I think about regearing. I have searched for a power curve chart on the motor but I can't find one any where. Thanks

Mine cruises at about 2000 RPM at 65 MPH. 2200 is right in that range.

Don't worry about over revving it, you can't. It has a rev limiter. Just don't get crazy with the downshifts.

Yeah don't be afraid to let the 5.4 rev up. And i can cruise at 70mph at 2000rpm with 3.73s. Do you know what gears you have

Of course every engine has it's limits. Cruising at 2200 rpm is plenty comfortable, of course that is, running and being maintained properly. The 5.4 makes the most of it's power at or around 5k.

Yes I do have 4.10s. I was thinking about going with some lower gears, but I am getting pretty decent gas milage right now, but my first gear is worhtless as it stands I start in second(easily with little gas).

If I lower my cruising rpms to 1800 to 2000 with the motor struggle since it makes most of the power up higher in the rpms. Any one have the manual 5.4 with the same issue?

Any thoughts on my gear issue? I am thinking it would be good to bring my first gear back in to play, and may help my fuel milage. Being a manual I shouldn't lose any towing power. I would just wait a little longer to shift.

4.10 + ZF6 = 2000 rpm @ 65mph

OP might have 4.30s

I have the zf5, at 65 mph I am turning 2250 rpms. According to the axle tag I have 4.10.

It won't help your fuel mileage much. These engines are surprisingly insensitive to gearing.

that puts your axle centerline at just over 15.1" high... does that measure out?

The ZF5 OD is .76:1 (or .77:1 in the wide ratio setup) while the ZF6 OD is .72:1

...and yes, that makes a pretty decent difference.

(.76 [Rev1/Rev2] * 4.1 [Rev2/Rev3] * 65[mi/hr] * 5280 [ft/mi] * 12 [in/ft]) / (2250 [Rev1/min] * 60[min/hr] * 2π [/Rev3]) = ~15.13 in.

Yes, it did measure right around 15".

So changing the gear to a lower 3.73 or 3.55 is a bad idea?
