Rear Gas Tank Replacement

Hey guys, i have a 1994 f150 4.9L and i have a leak in my rear tank. I've just decided to get a new one but I've never replaced a tank before. I've read from a couple other people that you can either take the bed off or do it from underneath. I'm just going to do it from underneath because i don't have the time nor the space to take my bed off. But I'm not sure quite what to do from there, can anybody help? Do i need a special tool to take my fuel lines off?

Yes special tool. I've used the plastic ones, they usually break so buy the metal ones if you can. I'm not saying the ones in prev post are no good, as I did not get that type, but the other plastic ones are junk. If your going to replace the tank look up 38 gallon fuel tank swap. I just did it on my diesel & its well worth it.

Funny you should mention the metal fuel line removal tools. I have a perfectly good metal set, I could not get one of the fuel lines loose. After 2.5 hours I gave up. Took a trip to the store, ended up with that set I posted above. Went back home, started in again.....30 seconds later I got that stubborn line off.

Gas tank replacement

I have a 1994 f150(4.9L - six) also and have replaced both tanks in the last 3 years. Mine had internal fuel pumps(one in each tank) and given that there are all kinds of posts and even a recall from Ford concerning the check valves failing on these electric pumps I replaced them while I was at it. You have to remove the pump anyway to move it to the new tank. My 94 has 256,000 miles on it and both tanks failed around 210,000 miles. The pumps are not cheap but if you're going to keep the truck it might be worth the expense.
