ok i just got a 1974 bronco with a 302 and a three speed. now last night i noticed that my all my lights would brighten about every secound, would also see it on the amp gauge. the needle would jump up then back then jump again. now is that the alternater going or a voltage regulator? or is it something else couldnt be much there isnt any eletrical in these things. let me know thanks
The old style voltage reg will cause lights to flicker, but faster than a second. The headlight switch has a thermal breaker inside it that could either be going bad or a short to ground is causing it to cycle.
ok ive looke dat it a bit more, it does flicker alot faster then i thought and only under load(while moving) can i get a new switch for it or thermal breaker at a parts store or is that going to be something i have to special order from one place or another and any idea how much it will be?
If the headlights, dash lights flicker and gauge needle bounces a little, it'll be the voltage reg. The old ones were actually mechanical contacts inside where the newer style is electronic. The headlight switch has the thermal relay built in and would be a lot slower( lights would actually go out momentarily). Regulator at any parts store,(NAPA) "maybe" headlight switch. Jeff's BroncoGraveyard, Tom's Bronco Parts, Wild Horses are some vendors. If you replace regulator, make sure to mount the reg and ground before plugging in the wires or you run the risk of smoking it.
Most suggest replacement with the older style regulators for durability, reliability, and functioning. They ARE around.
a short to ground
I'm cheep, this has to B done anyway - is free. If U know how to test - go ahead 1st, then throw money @ the problem???
Ck alt output (no multi-meter? O'Rielyes or local big box prts stores do it free), got schematics? (fordifacation) ck the identified grounds - even by eye helps.
