I have an 01 F-150 Supercrew 5.4 V8 4x4 with 157,000 miles. I am starting to face what I assume is transmission problems.
What happens is the other day I was towing my 18 foot lowboy trailer with an old nissan frontier (see Pic: Image - TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting) I was driving on the expressway with it on cruise control at 60 mph. I would come to an overpass and the truck would downshift to climb, shifting clean and normal, i get to the crest of the over pass and rereach 60 mph, the truck the shifts back up to a higher gear, this shift is real rough and sometimes quite violent. The upshift is the main problem this scenario repeated is where I've been able to duplicate it the most and in this scenario sometimes the downshift is rough as well.
Any thoughts on what my problem is? is this the downfall of my transmission and I'm going to need to replace it soon or is this a fixable problem?
I would change the fluid and filter. buy 12 quarts, and a filter. you will notice a big difference. I know people here will say flush it and all that, but dont flush it. just change the fuild and filter. I did on my 98 F150 with a 170K on it. My 98 shifted terrible, and after I changed the fluid and filter, its shifted fine after that. and when you drop the pan and if its never been off, you will see a plastic plug in there, that will tell you its never been dropped.(the pan)........if you have the plug in there, just pitch it. and you will see a rubber plug on the bottom of the bellhousing, turn the engine slowly until you see a plug in the converter, drain that too. (thats why I said 12 QTs)
Thanks for the advice, I had a transmission service done in 09, to be honest not to sure what this "service" included but your idea sounds like a great start and hopefully is the issue.
