I have been looking far and wide for a f150 short bed, wanted a 300 six 5 spd carburated, no luck within 500 miles of here, but found a 1990 with a 302 F.I.,right here in town, so I think I will give it a try. The guy wants $1500 for it, 112,000 miles, no rust, a few dents, paint ok, but stripeing pealing off. Interior pretty good, needs a seat and radio. It had set for over a month in the cold and it started first try. Impressed me!
Any suggestions? Any easy installs for performance? Headers? Throttle body spacer?
I am anxious to buy it and have an evening/weekend project for the summer and get it ready for fall. All I got to do is sell my wrangler and get started.
I am not real concerned about appearence, I just want it to be dependable and preform ok.
I think I will start with new fuel pump, exhaust, u-joints,
a new seat, and radio,
new breaks, seals, bearings, work the tie rods over, add lock-out hubs,
I realy like those trucks, always wanted a short box. Performance will be resricted with SD but will be a very reliable truck, will run forever.
All those upgrades will be very helpful, stock these motors breath very poorly, but I say go for it, there's not many of those style of trucks around here anyway.
the 302 is one of the best motors i've ever had. intake and exhaust will help you the most, of course. 4x4, right? leveling kit would be on the top of my list, even f250 coils.K&N drop in filter, you will notice a difference. its kinda a grey area with the throttle body spacer....dual exhaust with an X-pipe and chrome, 4", "swept" tips is how i would do it.
Yes a 4x4, forgot to mention that. It looks low in the front, I was just looking up options to lift it a couple of inches.
I had an 83 short bed, 300, 4x4, 4spd, that I pretty much fixed everything on except paint, and I got a brain fart and sold it to buy a wrangler that I thought I had to have! Now after going through it front to back, and having a terrible ride, and a sore back, with no room in the front, I want an F150 again!
The throttle body spacer won't help on these trucks , exhaust and cam would be the biggest help , long tube headers with a good exhaust , also gearing is important on the 302 , you need to keep it in its power band.....Lew
