rear main seal

Need some help with my 1979 F100, it has a 302 in it I believe I need to change the rear main seal. I am trying to do all the work myself to get this truck restored, is this something that I can do. Any advice that will help. I am no expert in mechanics but have a lot of patience. Thanks

Is it a 2wd or a 4x4?

Well my 4x4 351m is leaking oil (somewhere, aint figured it out yet) but i think it is the rear main seal. You could drop the oil pan or the transmission, just whichever you want to, and you would probably be able to do it on your own.

i have a 79 w/302 and to change the rear main seal on it u have to drop the oil pan and pull the rear main bearing cap cause it is a 2 piece seal. unlike the 80's model 302 wear the rear main is pressed in from the outside.

its a little harder with a 2wd because of the crossmember that goes under the engine. its easier if you have an engine hoist to lift the engine a little bit to get more room to take the pan off. you have to take the rear main bearing cap off and then replace the seal, just be carefull to not tear the new seal when you out it back in. you'll also need to make sure you put the main bearing cap back properly, which requires a torque wrench. a repair book will show you how to do this and give you the torque specs, its a good idea to buy one. if not, public libraries generally have them.

its also a good idea to replace the oil pan gasket, you'll probably rip the old one up anyway, and take the valve covers off and replace those gaskets as well because they could also be leaking down the back of the engine.
