I was underneath my Ranger, changing the oil and looking at the fuel filter, and I noticed that there is alot of rust everywhere. Not big flaky rust really, it's more finely grained, but it's pretty extensive.
I was thinking maybe it had been brought down from somewhere that used salt on the roads, but I checked another Ranger, a '98, and it looks pretty much the same as mine.
The owner of the '98 bought it brand new here in Texas, so I'm thinking it's normal after all.
It's not a major amount of rust really, but it did get me to thinking.
I have a 98 ranger myself. Mine has under body paint. There is NO rust on the painted surfaces. All the unpainted surface have surface rust. I plan to paint the entire bottom after a little scoth-brite. I would expect the rust is normal since ford hardly uses SS or aluminum, except on the fuel lines. Don't worry about it unless it is just an issue of looks. If it makes your eyes twitch headed to the store for some primer grey. Alot of people use black. FYI grey is much easier to spot leaks.
