Noise changing with Speed

I have a pretty noticeable noise that follows road speed that sounds like a whirling (the best i can do to describe it). I originally thought it was my front needle bearings after looking around here and finding guzzle's page, but it really am thinking its in the rear end now. If I look back while driving it gets more noticeable...I have checked the rear drive line for play and the u-joints for damage and could not really see anything obvious. There is also quite a bit of vibration at different speeds on the highway (some speeds btwn 55-70 are worse than other). Anyone have any ideas?

Have you checked your tires? Also when you check your u-joints, get a little rough checking them. I have had u-joints seem in good shape before, changed them out and my problem has been fixed.

Since this is a family site...I will behave....

Check the tires for cupping....out of the ordinary chunks missing from the tread.

Use a prybar or large screw driver to get better leverage on the ujoints to see if there is any excessive play.

The tires have no issues besides being a little old, the wear is really good. I'll be a little more aggressive with the u-joints when it stops raining. Does this sound like a driveline problem then? as opposed to something else...
