So, I just switched out the steering column in my F250 among other things I am doing to it, now I am having serious problems with the Idling it is idling at 1500
rpms with the fast idle adjuster all the way out, the air and gas adjusters all the way in, i sprayed some carb cleaner in it and around it, started it,adjusted it, and it ran like a dream for about a minute then it back fired and went right back up to 2000 rpms so i tried to start it again and the starter wouldn't disengage even when i turned the engine off WTH??? With the breather off everything in it moves freely that i can see.. All help is appreciated.
Is this a carb engine? Then check that the throttle cable is not sticking.
For the starter if you unplug the light gauge wire from the fender mounted starter relay does the starter then stop? If so the actuator in the steering column may be bad.

Reason: typo
Yeah, I replaced the actuator because sometimes you fiddle with the key forever before it will try to start the truck, so i replaced it and it is doing the same thing. I'm wondering if it might be a short somewhere because when i turn the key to start the truck the radio goes dark. And yes it's a four barrel edlebrock 650 1406, the cables are fine is it possible my truck is out of time? or do i need a carb rebuild.
unless you messed with the distributor your timing should be fine... while i can't say it's the carb definatly... you can dismantle ur carb, and then get a carb bath from the auto parts store that will completely disolve any build up, and finish with new carb kit...
the starter... ugh... you might have a bad relay on the fender that is sticking open and keeps sending power to the starter. make sure you have your system double grounded to the fender and engine block, or engine block and frame...

I just replaced the solenoid that that was the issue but it's still doing it, it's grounded out to the engine and the solenoid grounds itself when you bolt it to the fire wall. I'm stumped this thing will not disengage with the key all the way out of the ignition i have to unhook the starter wire from the solenoid..
Has to be the throttle plate being held open, either on the primeries or secondaries. If you have vacuum operated secondaries make sure they are not being held open.
For the starter, if it does not stop when the wire is pulled off of the fender mounted relay then, as nst says, maybe the relay is bad.
If it does stop then either the ign switch (on the column under the dash) is bad or the linkage from the key switch is bad or you have bad wires (check the big bundle of wires on the firewall near the booster for bad insulation)>
I have to shake that bundle of wires to get my fuel pump to turn on almost every time i start it, thats why i'm almost positive it's something shorting out. how would i even start to look for a short in there, and how whats the best way tofigure out what wire does what? any suggestions at all?
where could i find a factory wiring diagram for my truck? got it purring like kitten today ready to drive it ....the dagg dern tail lights aren't working......... the starter sticks like a tick on a coon dog, the fuel pump only works when i wiggle the wire, the radio shorts out, the dash display fuse keeps blowing, theres still a loud clunking coming from the bottom, and my carrier bearing if thats what it is called is blowed out like a loose butt hole.
OEM Factory wiring diagrams come first!
Look on ebay for your year truck... I will warn you they aren't cheap $100-$150, but you'll be able to fix anything that ever breaks (well worth the $$$ spent). It should look something like this but in the right year... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-...sQ5fLiterature
