just replaced my valve seals on my 4.9 today, the air tube in the head made the exhaust valve on cylinder 2 difficult but i got it. gonna put the head back on in the morning, really hope this is the last time i have to take that head off!!!
not sure how id be able to take the valve retainers out without taking head off, compress the spring push the valve down and then give it a good firm tap.
A couple of ways. If you have compressed air you can, with both valves in the closed position, connect it to one of the cylinders by an adapter in the spark plug hole and that will keep the valves from dropping.
I have also heard of guys getting the piston to TDC, with valves closed and filling the cylinder with nylon rope, through the plug hole, to keep the valves from dropping.
You need a lever type valve spring compressor for both methods.
However you got it done and that`s all that matters.
