I am new to this site and need help. i had just bought a 2002 f350 powerstroke about 3 weeks ago its my first deisle and i was driving up the road and all of a sudden my truck shut off and when i got out there was about 5 quarts of oil on the ground it is coming from the front of the engine looks like behind the balancer to my knollage the truck shut off because of the low oil i guess its a safety thing i was just wonderig if it could be the crank seal and how hard they are to change thanks
Welcome to FTE. Crawl up on top of the motor with a flashlight. Is there a bunch of oil pooling on top of the motor?
Your fuel injectors run off engine oil so that's why the truck shut down. Usually a big leak like this is the result of a blown o-ring or oil line. Something you'll be able to fix yourself once we find out for sure where the oil is coming from.
well its deffinetly coming outaa the font seal and i stoped at the parts store and they have no listing for a front crank seal could it also be called a timing cover seal they look kinda the same
While front seals do fail, it's not common at all. Make sure it's not higher up on the engine. Lots of places for these things to leak other than a seal.
Make sure your CPS is still in it's hole. Make sure it's not coming for above and running down past the balancer. The High Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP) sits on the top, front of the engine and anything around that can leak. It can even spray oil to a different location. Just don't seen to me that a front main would fail that bad, that fast. Now a HPOP will pump out 5 qts of in a very short time
i noticed a leak about a week ago up front of the engine on the staering lincage i have a 6 step programmer on it and had it turned up all the way and i jumped on it yesterday and thats when something gave loose oil leak wise
You blew a high pressure oil line somewhere, it will be near the front. You may have even cracked your HPOP. Look for signs of oil under and around it.
is there any high pressure lines on the front of the engine cause its dry from the water pump up just a little damp from it hitting the belt and splashing up

I have to agree with the other guys here, look between the cylinder heads for a big pool of oil down in the valley.
If it blew out the front seal like you are saying, then that's kind of a new problem that we don't see with the 7.3s.
