97' 4x4 question

97' 4x4 question
I have a 1997 f 150 and the four wheel drive does not work, my mechanic tried new relays, a new switch, and a new acuator, none of these have worked. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I know another guy with the same problem, he has not got his fixed yet either. Is this common with this year?

Hi plevis and welcome to FTE 
If you hit the search button near the top of the page and go from there you will find others with the same problem and hopefully some answers.
A somewhat common problem is the electric motor on the transfer case having bad connections or being stuck and also vacuum problems to the servo on the front diff.
Do the 4x4 lights on the dash light up when you try putting it in 4x4?

I agree, need more info as far as 'what happens';, etc, etc, when you try/attempt to actuate 4x4.
There is a plethora of concerns/problems with the 4x4 operation.
Noises/lights/anything. Need more input........
(not to throw stones, but)..........was your 'mechanic' a ford technician? Reason I say this, is MOST ford technicians have at their ready a HUGE amount of information at their disposal. All the parts you've shotgunned at it so far, (hopefully you haven't had to pay for all the diag/parts yet), anyway, could have been avoided with proper diagnosis/good information.
Again, not trying to start a flame war, or trashtalk anyone, just need more information.
I wish I had a dollar, (or more), for every vehicle that came into our dealership that someplace else had diagnosed, thrown parts at, over and over, and then the customer FINALLY brings it into the one place that has the info, (and most of the parts), to fix it right, and voila'. done deal.
In either case, good luck with your concern.
