I bought the airbag conversion kit by Monroe from rockauto.com. Friday I did the rear end. It was a pretty tough job for me. It took 3 hrs to lift the truck, get a bunch of tools, and do the rear driver's side. Besides lifting the rear end up onto 2 jack stands, I had to also support the rear axle with a floor jack. It took quite a while to pull the airbag out. There was still quite a bit of air in it and the line going to it is hard to get at with the bag in place. The upper shock mount bolt was really tricky to get at. The worst part was trying to get it lined up when putting the new shock in. Then I had trouble with the spring compressor. I got the spring in place and started to loosen the compressor when I saw that it was hitting top of the spring housing. I had to tighten it back down and remove the spring. Then take the compressor off and put it back on making sure it I'd be able to get it off without hitting anything once the spring was in place. BTW I have a strut spring compressor, not a regular coil spring compressor. The pass side was a little better. It took an hr and 1/2. I already knew what to expect and what size tools I needed. All in all I'm happy with the results. The truck drives the same as before. I wanted to do the front end on Saturday, but the wife had other plans. Then Sunday it rained all day, then it turned into snow which was about a foot total, plus 2 ft drifts. So the front can wait for another day.
having the coil spring compressor would have save a little time, but it is still a bi$%^. It took me 5 hrs total on the rear and I got the front done in 45 mins but min is a 4x2 and no air bags on front. Good luck sorry to hear about your problems.
Just wondering, are you talking about putting the air suspension in or taking it out. I am hoping that it is taking it out ( strictly my opinion) The air suspension is junk, what little benefits you get, you get more problems with it.
When I went looking for an expedition, I would walk away from any one that had the air susp. and in the model year of 97 or 98 i would also walk away from one with the 5.4.
Hodges710, I removed the rear air suspension and replaced it with shocks and springs. When it worked, the air suspension was a great thing. But after so many years and too many problems, I wasn't going to spend any more money on it so it had to go.
