The ignition loak on my 91 F150 does not return to the run position when released, and the starter will not engage. Is this an example of the "igition switch" in the column is faulty, and if so what is the replacement procedure? Thanks in advance for any advice
Hi Brown
It does sound like your column switch under the dash but if you want to be sure here is the plan:
Disconnect the plastic cowling under the steering column and drop the column down a few inches, be sure to watch the shift indicator cable as they will break if you put too much stress on em. Once the column is down a bit you should be able to get at that switch. If you want a better description let me know.
It's probably the actuator. It is the linkage that goes to the ignition switch itself. If you turn the key and it doesn't feel like a "spring" is attached to return the key back I can guarantee that it is the actuator that is your problem and not the switch. Search this website under the key work "actuator" and several messages should reply on how to fix it....
I found out it is not the switch or the actuator. There is a half moon part in the upper part of the column that is broken (I called the Ford parts house, and before I could finish describing it, he said sure,"have plenty in stock")It appears this a common problem for this model of truck. Do I have to completely diassemble the clamshell containing the tilt mechanism to install the new part, or is there another way?
Thanks
Darrell
Well folks, I am now well versed in the care and feeding of Ford's steering column setup. Now all I have to worry about is my 93 F150,
my son's 93 Ranger, my daughter's 93 Ranger, and my wife's daughter's 94 Ranger.........I appreciate all of the info and hekp in resolving the problem.
Hi there, i have the broken actuator syndrome as well. i got the steering wheel off and the blinker assembly out but then i was scared off when i couldn't see the broken part or how to access it, so i gave up up and put it all back together so i could use the truck.
i'm wondering if getting to the broken part is one of those special tool nightmares where springs and bearings fall out or if it's pretty straight forward and not too tough to do?
one shop said $518 ford dealer said $240 and a local shop said $90 and the part was only $11 and included. i'd rather do it myself seeing how i was most the way there already.
anybody that remembers whats involved once the blinker assembly is out of the way, i could use some encouragemnet haha..
have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!.
