spartan install questions

so with the price of fuel going up, and the need to go long distances this summer with my dually, I found a good deal on a used Spartan and doc/dpf delete pipe.

I know I need to relicense, spartan has already verified the exact steps I need to take, and they are underway.

My son picked this up for me (and verified, per spartan, that the dashdaq powered up), and we will see him in a couple weeks.
So, killing time, I am prepping for the delete pipe install. (install the tuner and dpf on tunes first)

I searched thru here and youtube for a doc/dpf combo swap, but didn't find one..

it 'seems', looking at the pipe pictures(attached), that the doc (cat) is held on by the typical exhaust to header pipe clamp. two bolts, one on each side that pulls the pipe side clamp to the header side clamp.

and the rear at the dpf, is a single pipe clamp that pinches the outer pipe onto the inner pipe..

so, this SHOULD be,
  • loosen the rear clamp,
  • wiggle to show movement.
  • support dpf (jack or whatever),
  • remove two nuts at the cat front..
  • and drop/slide towards the front to disengage the rear dpf tip..

install of the delete pipe is the reverse..

I have a 4x2 so, I'll have to get the front up a little to work on it..

do I have it right?

the DPF was replaced less than 2000 miles ago, so the rear clamp should be pretty good..
the latest Spartan software doesn't need the sensors in the delete pipe anymore.

Sam

All these Spartan guys and no comments....LOL..... Buy extra sensors if money permits, you will probably need one anyways as some dont come out easy, Use lubricant if removing them, and antiseeze when installing.

He shouldn't need the sensors with the new tunes as he mentioned. Just find something with the same threads to plug the holes and he'll be on his way. I wish I could be more help Sam but I did the full exhaust swap so I'm not positive on the questions you have. Only thing I can add is to remove the hangers from the frame and drop the exhaust that way. It's a lot easier than fighting the exhaust off the rubber hangers and will save you some serious time. Best of luck and welcome to the Spartan club.

It looks like you have it pretty much down. You will need to also unbolt the hangers from the frame, 3 nuts per hanger on the outside. It really takes some wiggling to separate the DPF from the tailpipe section. I plugged the 3 EGT ports with bolts, and just re-installed the pressure sensor since my pipe is exactly like yours, the nipple is already installed. Good luck, and it is well worth it.

And IMO, everyone who says they dis it in 45mins are full of it! I took the whole section dpf/doc in one shot, was heavy on my chest and was a pain to wiggle free!
Easily worth it tho, FYI the dpf/doc weighs in at about 78lbs.
Good luck!

Agreed. It is definitely not as easy as it is made out to be, but worth every bit of the work.

Hand figuring mpg was 9-10 before .

The lie-o-meter is completely confused by a tuner. Hand calc is the only way.

it took me close to 2 hours to do the whole process. I only did the dpf delete. I also wrestled those rubber hangers off....not a lot of fun! I've been very happy so far and have picked up an average of 3mpg. I also have the stock intake and have no intentions of changing it. I've floored it a few times with the 275 tune and have not sucked in the filter minder. Also the sound is almost no different inside the cab, which is exactly the way I wanted it.

just finished my delete pipe install yesterday.. I found a used system and a doc/dpf delete pipe.. I unbolted all the hangers, including the rear one at the muffler, and the dpf/exhaust pipe separated for me..

I had a jack under the dpf, so wiggled the whole assembly back and down..wasn't bad.. more back & forth trying to figure out what tools to use.

moved the sensors over, (the dpf had been replaced last fall, so they weren't stuck.. I had to drill a new hole in the bracket for the pressure sensor.. seems odd, but whatever).. there seems to be a newly surfaced problem with the EGR not cycling due to the missing sensors.. plug & in danging and the egr cycles.. so I just moved em.. glad I had the pipe with the bungs.

I moved the sensors over working on a saw horse at waist height.. nice..

put the one hanger back on after I got the pipe installed loosely.

took it for a ride this morning on the 210 tow tune.. nice power.

will have to try the others.. 275 in particular..

no smoke except if you floor it

yes, the whole no egr cycling thing is annoying. if the weather ever warms up, I'll get under the truck to hook my sensor back up. (and zip tie it to the frame cause no bung in pipe.) my sensor will come out easy because the dpf only has about 30 miles on it. other than that I'm pleased with the spartan. I've been running the 210 tune shifting is very nice and mileage doesn't seem to be any different than the 275 tune. the only other quirk I can complain about is that the idle is a little high when it's cold out. seems to get better on warmer days. how's the sound with dpf/doc delete?

today was the first day and it was cool (48-50), and I noticed the higher idle then yesterday afternoon at 91..

I started off with the 210 tow tune.. snappy but the shifts seem a little harsher than necessary.. rumor has it the 250 & 275 aren't..

I can't tell any sound difference in the cab, and a little more wooshy outside if you're standing there..

now I gotta find some gauge theme that has a viewable contrast with my polarize sunglasses on. these black background gauge images are almost totally invisible.

i think you'll find the 250 and 275 tunes shift harder like the the 210 tow. the regular 210 is very smooth. there seems to be no limit to what you can do with gauge set-ups(if you know how). I haven't really messed with mine yet....but again, I'm not that motivated to do anything outside when its 20 degress with 20 mph winds. your description of the exhaust is exactly like mine with the dpf only delete.

I really like the 210 (reg not tow) shifts good, great power and damn near no turbo lag.
Last week I loaded the 175 for @hits and giggles, not liking it very much, alot more noticeable on the lag as well. The roads are starting to clear around here so Im gonna load the 250 up pretty quick.

(Anyone know how I get the higher tunes 275+? Do you get a few or do you have to pay for each tune seperately?)
