Hay yall, my step dad has a 2009 F250 4x4 with the 3valve 5.4. it's a nice motor...when its in an f150(lighter truck!). in the superduty its kinda under powered. especially when we tow our 26 ft fishing boat to florida. the motor doesnt have the guts so even cruising on the highway at 65mph he has to have jammed in the gas to mantain speed! and thats on flat and hats not even on hills! The question is: i know that roush makes a roots style charger for the 3 valve 150's and even maintains the factory warrenty. would this work on the superduty(without voiding the warrenty)?
theres a video of a supercharged v-10 floatin around. but im sure a 5.4 f150 charger would work its the same damn engine.
as far as warrenty id make a call to the dealership.
cool, thats what i was thinking because everything looks the same under the hood. i would think that if a sertified ford tech installled it that the warrenty should hold.
now i just have to convince my step dad to spend the 5-6000 grand!!
The problem with supercharging the 5.4L 3V engine is the internals. The crank is forged but the rods and pistons cannot take a lot of boost. I recently inquired of two performance shops about installing the Whipple supercharger on my 2005 F350 5.4L 3V engine. The first shop wanted $15K and the second shop wanted $20K. You have to upgrade the rods, pistons, injectors, fuel supply, etc. and it adds up quick. Now, you can do the simple install but you will have issues ($$$) later when the internal start to break.
For less money you could do a 5star tuner. I'd also look at re-gearing the differentials. If it's straining that hard, I would think the truck has 3.73 gears. Re-gearing would get the truck in the RPM range necessary for towing that big boat.
