TRUCK HAS JUST OVER 5000 MILES ON IT.HAD THE TIRES ROAD FORCED,NO HELP! TOOK IT TO THE DEALER FORD SAID REPLACE THE TIRES 2 AT A TIME (R THEN F), PICKED IT UP YESTERDAY NO BETTER AND SAID THAT FORD WANTS TO PUT A NEW DRIVESHAFT IN IT!
ANY IDEAS?
There has been a fair amount of talk about this. I think that the leaf springs and shock combo does not mate well with the 20" wheel/tire. I don't really have the issue but I do notice more reaction in the suspension over consistent bumps/ruts in the road at certain speeds. It does feel strange at times when driving unloaded.
With tongue weight or a load it all goes away in my case, loaded suspension seems to calm it down, which is obvious on all trucks anyway.
I FEEL THAT FORD WILL GET IT TAKEN CARE OF, ITS JUST A HEADACHE TO HAVE TO CARRY IT BACK SO MANY TIMES.
I'VE ONLY PULLED MY CAMPER ONCE SINCE PURCHASED THE TRUCK, WILL SEE IF IT CHANGES.

This is the first time I've heard anyone mention the 20" wheels as being a possible contributing factor to this problem. Where did you get that idea from?
It's just a gut feeling. I don't know if there is anything to it. I compare to my '08 I had.
My '08 was very grounded feeling.
I understand that 18" wheels and 20" wheels both have rubber on them that makes the gross circumference nearly identical, but my '11 feels a lot different.
My gut tells me that the wheel/tire combo does not have enough spring and shock rate. These are big and heavy wheels/tires with a tuned suspension that seems to be softer than in the past, though equally capable in the GVWR area.
I just "think" that the balance act between rotating mass and suspension engineering is cut to a very close margin, not over engineered/built, and not under built, but very close.
Same goes for the steering dampener. I know from other posts that adding a beefier stabilizer there makes a nice difference in handling bumps in the road.

Yeah, there is another thread about bounce at 42 mph. I posted on there as my truck hops at 50mph. My truck has two new tires, new drive shaft, new rear axle and no change. I have 20" wheels, short bed, yada yada. If you get it solved, please let us know so I can see if I can apply it to my truck. thanks
Some have replied they can get this to occur at will so has anybody tried taking some video from another vehicle or putting a camera on the frame and filming the excitation? Also for vehicles with the 20's what about mounting the spare and trying it? What you're looking for is making a change and seeing if it affects the situation.
Sorry for the cap lock ! bad habit. These are 18" wheels, will post when new driveshaft gets put in.
Just seems odd after having it in for an alighnment at 2500 miles and the new update on the ecm done at the same time that now I have the vibration and my mileage has dropped about 2.5 to 3 mpgs.

It would seem likely that if it happened right after you had it in that they should re-check the alignment also. Does it seem like it's out? Or did they check it again already? If this happened right after they had it the place to start is re-checking what they did, not just start replacing parts.
To the original poster keep us informed please. I have had vibration since new. Had the tires rebalanced no good. Comes on at highway speeds of 65 plus. I have SRW 18" shortbox CC. Drive shaft could be the problem. No shake in steering.
I didn't bring it in because the nearest highway is 40 miles and like the OP didn't want to be without the truck so many times..Vibration isn't bad but it is defineitly there.
My 08 was smooth on the highway as well...
My 2011 Dually with 17" wheels has it as well. I posted quite a bit in the other thread about my repair attemps. Pretty sure not wheel related. 17' dually, 18", and 20" have all reported the same issue.
I agree that it is something between the relationship of the driveline and leafpack/shock setup. Mine (and others) have had driveshafts switched and balanced with no help. Perhaps a quality aftermarket shock may fix it. Or, as one person on another Ford board said, his dealer replaced his driveshaft and carrier bearing completely with a heavier unit altogether and that cured it. Although his main complaint was vibration on takeoff, but who knows.
