My 79 F150 2wd started having braking problems yesterday, I have no back brakes unless I pump the pedal 2 or 3 times. The front brakes still work ok. Last night I almost hit a car backing out of my driveway (on a slope) because of it. Where should I begin looking?
I was thinking I need to pull the drums off and check the slack adjusters because they've been a little noisy (clunky) lately and if there's a lot of space betweent the shoes and the drums it would take a couple pumps to get the cylinders to extend far enough to activate the brakes, right? The pedal doesn't sink while holding the brakes so I think the master cylinder is ok, and the light isn't coming on from the proportioning valve being off center. Any thoughts?
Pull the rear drums and check the condition of the hardware. Make sure the adjusters are lubed and can spin. If it's clunking you might find more issues once you get in there.
