E-350 V-10 with missing EGR
I am new to this board, but I am having problems with my van and I am in need of some intelligent advice. I have a 2002 E-350 van with a 6.8L V-10 engine that I bought several years ago with about 100k miles. When I bought it, it ran smooth as silk.
About 6 months later, as I was accelerating uphill, it began to run rough. No warning light. I took it into the shop and had new plugs and checked the coils. It still ran rough. I had the fuel injectors cleaned and fuel filter changed. It still ran rough. It lopes under load such as going uphill and in normal driving in lower rpms. Idle is a tad rough, but not very noticable, but when I am driving around town it lags badly and seems to have preignition firing. PCV valve is ok. I opened up the engine cover and looked for the EGR valve today to remove and check it and from what I can tell, there is none. I can find the mount where it should be, but there is a metal plate there bolted over where the EGR valve should be mounted. I have also located the EGR vacuum solenoid nearby. It is mounted properly, but has no wiring or hoses attached to it. I have looked all around the engine compartment and cannot find any loose connections that should go to it.
So, my question is...is it possible that a previous owner of the van has removed/disable the EGR system? If so, could this be responsible for the engine running rough? Any thoughts or advice about other causes or things to check? I have taken it to the shop several times and no one has been able to diagnose the problem. Still no check engine light and I ran OBD diagnosis today with no codes.
Thanks for your help,
Travis
Try to clean or replace the IAC (idle air control) located on the upper part of the intake manifold. FYI the V10 like OE replacement Motorcraft or autolite spark plugs.
