Replacing Engine help

1996 explorer 4.0 xlt.

Engine is going to be replaced within the week hopefully. is there a more economically friendly engine (mpg) that can be used with a different ECU? or some sort of flashed ecu?
What are my options. i hate to spend a few thousand to bring life back to a gas guzzler

Keep in mind you are driving a heavy SUV (full 4x4 drive train), if you want better fuel economy invest in a small compact car.... Philip
