Exclamation 91 ranger help!

i have a 91 ranger STX with the 2.9 in it. I was just cruising around, minding my own business when i get a misfire. It missed every so often, so I didn't think much of it until it started hitting on only 3 cylinders. I pulled over, and then I could hear a lifter rattling. When I went to go check the oil, it was about 3" over the safe level and stunk like gas pretty bad. I drained a good 2 quarts out of it (don't worry, I had a jug i was draining it in) when i was on the side of the road, and it ran fine after that. I had about 20 miles left on the trip so i went for it. by the end of the 20 miles, the lifter tick got much worse and it was only hitting on 3 cylinders again.

It was pretty damp out so my buddy suggested that maybe the coil started missing.

I personally think it's the injectors getting stuck open and the motor is getting flooded.

The truck has a new ECU so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem but still, it's up for debate.

When I let the truck sit for a few minutes, it runs fine but after about 10 miles, it'll start running like crap again.

Note: I run Iso-Heet in every tank of gas. Also, my gas mileage has been VERY low (try the 8-12mpg range, and I don't tromp on it very much)

What's most likely wrong with it? (like I said, the oil stunk like gas, and I just changed it a week ago)

it is most likely your fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail.....pull the vacuum line off of it and see if there is gas in it?

if the line is removed, would what cause it to run so bad?

I don't understand that ^^^^ question...........there is a vacuum line on the fuel pressure regulator......the diaphragm on the regulator fails and the vacuum line sucks the gas into it.......pull the vacuum line and if it stinks of gas and there is gas in it....then that is your problem..if the line is fine then I agree with you it is probably a stuck injector

well, i'm gonna go investigate because when i got the truck the vacuum lines were a mess and my neighbor tried to hook them up and it's very possible he didn't hook that line up. it would explain all the problems with it because it goes the longest without missing a beat when i'm going in the 70-75mph range.

i checked it and it's still hooked up. it ran just the same, connected or not. i disconnected the sensor that's on the side of the intake and it ran a little better, but then started to die so i plugged it back in. it's been sitting so it's running on all 6 again but the lifter's still ticking.

and it also seemed like it built up a ridiculous amount of vacuum at the regulator. could it just be stuck open?

WAS THERE AS IN THE VACUUM LINE THAT WAS CONNECTED TO THE FPR

YOU MIGHT WANT TO DO A VACUUM TEST AND A FUEL PRESSURE TEST

Was there vacuum on the line? the FPR is just a rubber bladder......the vacuum pulls the pressure down......for the most part when it fails the rubber disintegrates and the gas bypasses it into the vacuum line........

I just noticed you have the 2.9. I was thinking you had the 2.3 ..........the FPR might not be on the fuel rail

yeah there was vacuum in it and no gas. are there any other sensors or regulators that could be causing the motor to flood?

the regulator is on the rail, just like a 2.3

not that i know off.......could be stuck injector like you said. if that was my truck i would do a fuel pressure test to see if the regulator is working.....it should go up about 10 psi when the vacuum line is removed.......if the pressure is to high it could cause the injector to stay open...........

.you know it also could be the rings, cracked/warped head? any miky substance around the dipstick etc?

the head isn't cracked, but there's a slight milkiness around the oil cap but that's because the radiator sprays a fine stream of antifreeze out when you hit 5k rpm with it and there were a few hills around here that needed 3rd gear to keep going.

could iso-heet cause the regulator to fail because of the alcohol content? just asking because i tend to pour a bottle to a bottle and a half in the tank at a time when i fill up

okay, new thing happened. removed the regulator to change it, but the spare regulators i have for it are for rubber, clamp on lines. the one that's in the ranger has a steel braided line with a fitting on the end. so i put the regulator back on and went for the 80 mile trip. i had to stop once because of a misfire and when i started it back up it went fine for the rest of the trip. i got to the destination and shut the truck off, and later i went to go to walmart and the thing wouldn't start! now it's not getting enough gas! what's going on?!?
