Evening again. I need to get behind the cowling on my 65. Is there anyway to do this short of cutting it apart and rewelding? I need to get the antenna off, the trim, and 1 of the hood hinges needs replacing and the nut behind is turning. Any ideas? Thanks, John
I recommend either take a small pair of vise grips and once you snake you arm up as Bill W mention attach it to the broken spot weld nut. Second option is one i recently did to my current project. that is use a saw-zall once you remove the hood hinge other bolts and cut the bolt that is spinning. (Between hinge & Fire wall side). Once then use a mig welder and tack weld the orfic (not proper trem) back to the fire wall and then drill out the old cut of bolt. But as Bill mention be flexible. Since I've gain 50pounds since my first option; option # 2 is my direct approach.
Mitch, i did mine the same way as you did... cut it with the sawzall and tack welded the nut flange, drilled out the remainder and ran a tap through it. but if you dont have enough room for the blade its better to try the vice grip thing first.
I did the vice grips thing with mine. 6 nut plates and there is always one that seems to want to strip. And just when you think you are going to get away clean it locks up and starts to spin.
Antenna removal is a piece of cake...once you know how. It does not involve anything more than: Removing the lead in cable from the radio, then TIE a loooong string to it.
The round antenna base is a separate part, threads on/off (there are two serrations on the base for a wrench to fit to). Once you remove the base, pull the antenna off the cowl.
The string is necessary, because to feed that fracatta lead in wire back through the cowl is almost impossible without it.
The antenna (C3AZ-18813-C) has been reproduced by Dennis Carpenter and is the same as: 1961/64 Custom/Galaxie/XL // 1961/66 F100/1100 // 1963/69 N/NT500/1000 // 1967/69 F800/1000.
