Odd steering play.

i was driving to the store the other day, and i notice that there is some wat alot of play in the wheel. i can turn the wheel about 3-4 inches either way with out it turning the truck( like lane changing) wat could cause this, i have looked at the linkedge and it looks to be all ok.

another thing, is there a way i can hardwire in a ipod jack into my stock speakers? just a head phone jack thing, so i can listen to my ipods radio while driving and such.

steering

I can help you with one of your questions. Look at the rag joint that is attached between the gear box and the steering column. This is what causes that much play with the steering.

Power or manual steering? If power...what type?

If you have the "steering assist" that came with 68-75 era trucks, it could be a bad PS pump....

As far as Ipod goes you should be able to connect 1/8" jack cable to the RCA AUX input on the back of the head unit you have...not sure what type unit you have. If you have original it will most likely not have AUX. If you really want to go the extra mile with the Ipod, get a replica unit from LMC and an Icamkit Digital to wire the ipod directly to the unit. This will let you charge and control the ipod directly from the unit.

If all linkage and rag joint appears ok it very well could be a worn steering gear. Very common on a high mileage vehicle.
