Ok everyone, after hearing all the great thing's about 5star in returned my hypertech and went the 5star way. Man I was like a kid in a candy shop when it got here! Once I installed it man I already could feel the differnece. Thanks again for all the recommendtion to 5star and thanks to Mike and Randy for making my truck run like a champ!!!
5 Star will ship you a tuner with their custom tunes loaded. You don't want the canned tunes most tuners have on them. 5 Star's are about the best you can get without doing runs on the dyno.
I just placed my order yesterday!! Cant wait to install!!! Gonna be a long "4-6 business days"! Getting 87tow, 87perf, and a 91perf! Randy and Mike were real helpfull and easy to deal with.
Installing a tune takes only a couple of minuets. You hook your tuner up to the ODB port and follow the on screen menus/instructions. The tuner will then upload the tune to the PCM and that's it.
87, 91, 93, etc is the octane level. 5 Star's tune will advanced the timing (and therefore produce more power) to take advantage of the higher octane level. Stock tune has only a small range of timing for 87 octane.
The tow, performance, eco are more for other adjustments such as transmission shifts, etc.
I run 87 performance tune most of the time. I love the 93 performance tunes but I just don't like the fuel cost. I don't get enough MPG in my driving environment to offset the higher cost. I do use the 93 tow tune a couple times a year when I need to tow dump trailer or equipment trailer. My 4R100 doesn't have a Tow/Haul mode like the TorqShift in the 3Vs so not only do I get better performance from the 93 octane I also get similar shifting as the TorqShift Tow/Haul mode.
Yes its like getting a couple cylinders added - i was amazed at the diff.
You wont have to wonder about if its really helping like a drop in filter - you can feel it. My fuel mileage went up about 1 mpg with the 87 perf tune and a heavy foot on top of it
You you use the "87 perf" when running 87 octane?? Pardon my ignorance on this subject! I tow every other weekend for camping. I just bought a 2011 Jayco 314BDS. This trailer dry weighs in at 7500 lbs. So I figure loaded up it be just under 9K. I have an 06 with the 5.4L and the 3.73 axle. My plan is to try a few runs and see how it does before I decide to change anything. Any negative aspects of these tuners?

I haul a Heartland 2010 NT31red w/ my truck. It's dry weight is 5500 lbs. I have the same verse truck as you do gears and all except I have a 4" lift with 35's on it. I would highly recommend make a few change's I've noticed huge diff. in my horse power and mpg especially on hill climb's . Stock it ran like a hog. Now it pull's like a champ and can actually spin the tire's off the line. I put cold air intake, throttle body spacer changed the y pipe( the stock one is a joke) and now the turner. I cant see anything neg. about a tuner. Just make sure you go with the right one, box one's are horrible(from experience). Custom is the only way to go. good luck and good hauling.
