hi i was wondering what transmission and axles came in a stock 1979 F150 and if the trans.. would fit right up to my F250..they are both 4x4 single cabs..the F150 is a short box..my 250 is a long box..also i was wondering if the doors would fit correctly and the driveshafts?? i really should have asked this stuff before i told the guy i would buy it this weekend..oh i almost forgot..will the rad.. fit up too?? any help would be great..
thanks A LOT in advance..
mike.
First, whether or not the trans will exchange is more a matter of what engine you have than what truck it is. The small blocks (289-351W & C) and 300 I6 have the same bellhousing pattern, the FE's and 351/400M are another and the 429/460 use another pattern entirely..... I could be wrong about all the big blocks; I'm a 300 guy myself... but that gives you an idea. If they have 4 speeds, they are more than likely NP 435's.
The F150 probably has a Ford 9" axle in the rear and maybe a Dana 44 up front...... I don't really know much about F150 4x4's. The F250 will most likely have a Dana 60 in the rear and a Dana 44 up front.
The driveshafts might be different depending on if they use different size u-joints and also if the F250 has a divorced transfer case, which looking at your gallery, doesn't appear to be the case. Ah, I just noticed you said the F150 is a shortbox, so the rear driveshaft will not be the same.
The doors on all 73-79's are basically the same, but they might have different mirror holes already drilled.
The radiators vary by a few factors: there are narrow (usually on sixes) and wide, different outlet locations and sizes for different engines, different mounting, and different core counts..... you'll just have to look and see.
Hopefully this answers everything for you... I don't really know much since I just have an F100 4x2 with a 300, but maybe this will tell you what you need to know.
hey thanks alot ben..they both have..or the f150 had a 400 in it and also my truck has the 400..another question i meant to ask is if the bumpers are the same width and if they should line up or not?? and there "was" something else i was meaning to ask but it slipped my mind again.. oh well... the reason i asked about the trans.. is is my truck came with an auto.. trans when new.but was sadly converted into a 4 speed manual..it has a married np205 transfercase and i was wondering if my transfercase just bolts to the back of the auto?? without too many problems??
i would really like to have it auto again..
another question..probably a dumb one but if i convert this back to auto seeing that my manual trans now has a granny low for first..will the auto trans..drop the rpm's a bit or no??
i think thats it..
thanks alot again ben..i appreciate it..
mike
