Hey I'm new here and to diesels in general. Hopin you guys can me figure this out. Problem started as truck surging real bad when I got 2 or 3 miles down the road in the morning. Its gotten worse from there. I'm now having trouble starting it when the motor is cold and the power loss is so bad the truck wont move itself. if i pull over and let it idle for a minute its fine. Any ideas?
I had a problem kinda like that a couple years ago. Only did it once , and hasnt since. I had no power. I got out of the truck and noticed There was hardly any exhuast coming out of tail pipe. Like it was plugged up.I remember it was really cold that morning . I think theres a "gate" in the turbo plumbing on the exhaust side That closes To help warm the engine faster. Does anyone know if thats right. If so than this could be part of your problem. Good Luck with this one.
The amount of exhaust seems fine. I called a friend yesterday and he mentioned high pressure oil sensor. He was gonna try to find out some and call me back but never did.
Is it due an oil change or low on oil? Mine did that once when low on oil. Crank fine and pull out fine but would stall and be a bear to recrank about a mile from the house.
First make sure your oil level is where it should be. Then check the oil level in the HPOP, (High Presure oil pump). It should be about 1/2 inch from the top.
Remove the plastic cover on the top of the engine then with an allen wrench, pull the little plug on the top and you can use something like a piece of wire to dip it in there and see just how far it is filled. Add more if needed.
Let us know if that helps. I am sure others will chime in with other options too.

We have a dozen or so 'ideas' and none of them should cost very much to get you going.
What year is your truck?
What is the temp where you are at?
Have you put any anti-gell in your diesel tank?
Did the Fuel in the filter 'freeze up' and then thaw out?
Do you have old oil that is too thick (injectors use old to open up)
Do you plug in your truck?
Does your Glow Plug Regulator work?
How many Glow Plugs are not Working?
Are the wiring harness that goes under the valve covers nice and tight?
If you 'pull over and let it idle and then it is fine'..... that means the truck is Warmed up and the above list is no longer an issue.
The truck is a '99 F-350 super duty. The first thing i did when it started acting up was change the fuel filter and the oil. As far as what temperature it seems to be the worst at its just above the low end of the operating temp. I've tried letting it warm up for just about everything between 10 minutes and half an hour and it just doesnt seem to make a diiference. i dont plug it in because i havent had it very long and it doesnt have a block heater. oh and i do use fuel treatment in it.
You may need to check what pressure the HPOP is giving when starting. A weak HPOP putting out lower than normal pressure can manifest itself in poor driveability. Also thin or diluted oil (w/fuel contam) will lower the HPOP output pressures due to a shearing effect on the oil.

What I mean about "what is the temperture" is the outside temperture. These trucks start fine if the Glow plug Regulator and Glow plugs are not working if it is above 50 degress 'outside temperture'. below the 50 degress, you need the glow plugs to fire up the Diesel fuel.
As for the 'block heater'... it would be very suprising if you did NOT have one. Almost all of these diesels come with block/oil pan heaters. Look under the drivers side of the engine around on the oil pan area. there should be a heavy duty 'plug in' cord coming out of the oil pan and it will be 'woven' forward to the drivers front of grill area. The 'plug' will take a little searching for around the tow hook/ bumper/grill area on your right side as you are standing and facing the truck from the front. Most of these cords are tucked away and never used/ some guys very suprised to see that the block/oil heater is on the truck and now use them all of the time. A little searching and you will find the cord. Once you plug it in... it is 'on', there is no 'on/off' switch.
