Starter or Timing Chain?

98 f150, 4.6v8, 157K miles, fresh oil change

So i went out to the truck this morning and when I went to crank it, it turned over once...maybe even only half way...then nothing. It had done this once before, but would usually start up on the second try.

The battery is good. All the electronics in the cab came right on.

Is this a problem with the starter?

With 157,000 miles on it,I have doubts its the timing chain.Anything is possible.Pull the starter, and take it to a local A/P shop, and have them test it.You also stated that the Battery is good.Perhaps it is,but just because the lights come on,does not mean that the Battery has enough CCA to spin the starter.

Starter wire love to corrode away on these trucks too, check right at the starter to make sure the wire hasn't broken at the terminal.

My first action would to clean both battery cable connections.
A battery inter cell connector going open will do the same thing.
The hint is does the interior lights dim or go out when you try to crank the motor.
If yes the battery system has an issue.
Good luck.

if you have acid around the terminals of the battery and connectors thats a good sign of a bad battery.
