Well im getting ready to replace the stock intake and carb for a edelbrock 650 carb and performer intake.
After looking around a bit for deals on the setup i've found you can buy the intake/carb/and a cam for the truck in a package deal for a pretty fair price.
So i was wondering how hards it putting in a cam into these trucks? (302) An would it give me any gains really? "worth while?"
A cam gives more power, but I don't know if it's worth the trouble. You have to pull the radiator out and if you have A/C, hope that you have enough room and you don't have to move the A/C condensor. You have to tear down the whole front of the engine, pull the valve covers and loosen all the rockers, take out the pushrods, take intake off, and fight getting the lifters out. The lifters usually have varnish on the bottom side and they don't like to come out. Then you can pull the cam out. When you put the other one in, there is one problem; you are working on a Ford, which has a non-adjustable valvetrain. What's this mean? You have to buy more parts so you can adjust the valves for the non-Ford cam, or get all this ticking in the engine.
Greetings FordNFishingLover, I know performance packages are sold like what you describe...I am just curious as the grind of the camshaft. In other words...what is the duration and lift specs for the cam? I have "built many 302's in my time and have discovered that if the cam is too "radical" it can lead to other problems you may not want...Hopefully, based on the carb and intake the cam is prolly rather mild which should give you pretty good response in certain ranges of throttle. I am just throwing this out there as something to research if you haven't already...
