1988 fuel pump question

I have a 1988 truck with duel fuel tanks im haveing trouble with the back tank when i switch to this tank the truck will run for a while and then it starts to sputter like its running out of gas and then it will cut completely off the truck has set up for about a year before i bought it without the tanks being switched over has anyone had the same problem i was thinking that it might be trash in the tank or the valve that switches between the tanks any ideas on what it could be ?

Thanks mike

1988 fuel pump question

The guy I bought my truck from never used his rear tank. I filled it with premium gas and put some fuel cleaner/conditioner in it and drove it for a little bit. Well, the fuel pump got gummed up and I had to drop the tank and replace it. I siphoned most of the gas out before I dropped it though, and saw that it was very rusty. My first guess would be that the fuel pump in that tank is not working. I would suggest taking the tank out and having it steam cleaned (I had mine done at a radiator shop), then putting a protective liner in it when it's clean to keep it from rusting on the inside again. I got the liner from the radiator shop; it's a quart can of liquid that you pour into the tank and roll it around to cover every part of the inside of the tank. It's been a while since I did all this, and no problems so far. Take a look at the sending unit when you take it out, and you can decide if you need a new one or if you can re-use the one you have; chances are you will want a new one, especially if the pump isn't working. Hope this helps.
