i got a '00 250 with a 5.4 and 4.10 gears which did great stock but i currently have 38.5x16x16.5 baja claws bolted on and i cant even run 70 without takin it out of OD on the hills for overpasses. i really dont do much highway drivin so my top crusing speed would be round 55-60. all the calculators online tell me i need 5.38s to put me in my ideal rpm rang at these speeds but it just seems really low to me. is anyone out there runnin tires this big or is really good with math? oh i do sometimes haul boats and dump trailers. thanks for the help
id say thats right on with the tires you have, these motors need help especially with tires that large. most of us run 4.88 with 35's so your right there.
Thanks. I got a quote today to get it done and he told me $2500 I found the parts for round $600 I know how to do it I'm just low on time but I think that price is just ridiculous what would be a reasonable price?
To restore your ratio back to what you had, you would need a new ratio of 5.0258064516129. I would add a little to that, since the 38's will have more rolling resistance, so I'd recommend a 5.13:1 ratio, which is available from a few sources.
You can get the gear sets for both axles for the 600.00 but most shops dont want to just swap the gears they want to do all the bearings and also need a rebuild kit with all the shims. I got a price from Randys ring and pinion for all the parts and it was 1150.00.
when i had my 3.73 swapped to 4.30 two summers ago the shop installed OEM ford 4.30 gears, all new timken bearings and shims and he installed new dust seal's no biggy for $2000.00 with a two year twenty thousand warranty.
yea i think im gonna do it myself. for that much id rather put a supercharger on it! any tips on a rebuild? ive done them on big rig axles and 9in ford.
