Hello guys, I just bought my 1989 F350 Dually with the 7.3L IDI Diesel, and it's got a few things that I'm concerned about.
1. When you bring the motor up to 2100RPMs, it starts to shake, kind of like it's starving, the fuel in the tank is over a year old, could that be causing this shaking/vibration issue from the motor?
2. The transmission is a bit noisy, but it's also the first time I've owned this type of tranny, and the floor around the shifter is a bit damaged, so it isn't as sealed as it should be.
3. The Glow plugs don't seem to stay on long enough, although I haven't checked it since I put the new batteries in.
This 2100 rpm shake, is it driving or sitting in park? The manual might make more noise if fluid is low or there isnt any insulationa round it. As for the glow plugs, get a test light and hook it to the battery, then take the bullet connectors off each glow plug and touch the test light to each one at the very tip, the light should come on. If it doesnt then its a bad plug. How does it start when dead cold?
1. Your fuel filter could be clogged, I would replace that regardless of it being clogged or not. Fill it will Diesel Kleen and screw a new one on. I would try to get that old fuel out and get some new stuff in there. I have never done it but I suppose you could use a siphon? Motorcraft FD3375 - Fuel Filter | O'Reilly Auto Parts
3. If the WTS light isn't on for more than 8 seconds (depending on temp. outside), you most likely have a few bad GP's. If you replace, only put Motorcraft/Beru GP's in, any other GP will swell inside the head and you will find yourself pulling the heads to get them out. well I haven't really driven it much yet, it's got NO brakes, that's gonna be fixed next week, I have the 5-spd Manual, I want to assume the ZF but I'm not entirely certain, I'll test the plugs when I have a chance, it starts right up from a dead cold.
sorry for the post edit, i saw in your sig that its a manual. def a ZF5 unless there has been some mods.
If it starts right up i wouldnt worry too much about the GP's. Onl;y if it starts lagging. Id test them anyway and definitely do what snapon said with the fuel filter. year old fuel will kill the fuel system, drain it or something. If ya cant, add a whole bottle of diesel kleen and i mean the big bottle.

It's got 2 50 Gallon tanks on it, I don't have anything to put the bad fuel into, I was told to replace the filter by another person, as well as adding 2 bottle of the silver bottle of Diesel Kleen.
ZD9 plugs are gonna be going in........are they hard to do on these trucks?
and do you think it could wait until fall?
I take it that the truck has set for a while. This is what I would do,
1
get a new fuel filter, and a jug of diesel clean, howes, or some other lubrisity-cleaner additive. Remove the old filter, fill the new filter with the additive and install new filter. Add the annitive you choose to the tank that the truck is pulling fuel from, in2 or 3 times the called for amount, then start it and let it run forabout 20-30 seconds and shut it off and let it set overnight. This lets the additive soak and clean the pump. Then take the truck for a hard drive.
2 I take it is a manual tranny. Does the noise lessen when you increase the engine speed? The prev. owner may have installed the single mass fly wheel conversion, which in my opnion is good. The only drawback is the gear roll ove noise at low engine speeds.
3 The glows should burn for around 15 seconds on the first start up. Shorter time may indicate burned out plugs. Replace with Motorcraft-beru ZD9 plugs only as aftermarket ones don't last and can cause majopr headaches. Hope this helps

GP's can be done in less than an hour with the right swivels, extensions, etc. You will need a 3/8 deep socket.

so then it's the fuel causing it to run rough I take it......it's got a full 50 gallon tank of ULSD, I've got nowhere to put it, I guess what I can do is drive it for a bit, let it idle, and dump a bottle into it, replace the filter, and fill it back to the top with fresh fuel....
I've got a LOT of payload capacity on this truck for fuel, it's got twin 50Gallon tanks and a 60 Gallon auxiliary tank on the bed.
but I am unsure if the rear tank has a working pump yet

she has been sitting for a while bud, over a year.
I won't have time to have it sit for enough time to let it soak the pump, it's in Arvada, CO at the moment, and awaiting me to fix it's brakes, if I didn't have to drive a big A$$ F150 thats always thirsty, i'd go down today and do that trick there.
I think there are a few bad plugs, and I'll end up replacing them this fall.
The noise seems to just follow the rpms, but like I said above, I haven't' really driven the truck very much.
It could be, i dont know for sure but it isnt helping. Id go buy two filters, two large bottles of diesel kleen and change the fuel filter right away and then again in a few weeks. If its gunked in there you might need the biocide or tank armor stuff that will kill off the algae that grows in fuel like that. If at all possible drain it, if not, filter and treat the **** out of it!

It will smell like crap if you can smell in the tank and sometimes when its bad, it will smell where the fill area is.
Best way to tell is pulling the fuel filter, if it looks like it has a sinus infection or the fuel is dark brown or worse in color, its really bad fuel. If its light gold color like veg oil, it will be ok.
