I just wanted to give a big shout out to the guys (and occasionally gals) of this forum. Y'all have been a big help, and an outstanding source of information in my getting and keeping my truck running. It's not my DD, but I do enjoy tinkering with it.
Tonight I finally got around to setting my idle, timing and mixture, and MAN what a difference. These things had obviously not gotten any attention in some time. My curb idle was 850 in drive (550 specified by the sticker), my timing was 18.5 BTDC with the vac advance disconnected, and my mixture was rich by more than 2 turns of the adjustment screw.
I just got back from a short test drive, and it's like a completely different truck. Before, it was loud, and shook like I had a race cam installed, and I was getting about 8MPG. Now it's fairly smooth, I can hear myself think, and I'm anticipating a bump in economy. Additionally, she gets up and goes noticeably better, and for some reason, a number of transmission quirks seem to have disappeared as well. Maybe it's the placebo effect on the transmission, but at any rate, I couldn't be happier.
So thank you all so much for answering my questions, other peoples questions that I have referenced, and most of all, for being such fine people with extensive knowledge and experience, and being willing to share that information. I'm off to bed a happy man
I agree with you. The people on this site have saved me loads of aggravation, needless mistakes, and lots of money by not taking my Beastie to the shop. One of the reasons I bought this ride was to avoid the shop costs that are often unavoidable with newer vehicles when one doesn't have an extensive garage and tools to work with. I have a reasonable amount of mechanical inclination but not much expertise past the simple things like starter/alternator replacement, etc. With the help of the people on this site and the occasional call to my old-school mechanic, I'm learning a lot about my vehicle and gettin-er done on my own. Thanks again for the help.
This is a real special forum with great people & tons of experience that they are willing to share. That is the reason I support this site. It is the only site I'm a supporter of.
