If you have the money, I would use a Lokar. The handle would be long enough. I have used the "racing" type shifters, and besides having to build a console to raise it high enough, I hated the slap style gated shifter. It was so aggravating going from reverse to drive and then back with all that interlock junk.
This is something I have recently discovered and put on my list of "want to do's" as well. Lokar makes a few different models, as does Gennie. Key difference is that Lokar is a push-button type, and Gennie is gated.
Most of the Lokars and Gennies mount right to the the tranny. I havent worked out all the logistics yet, but I am hoping that I will just be able to cut a hole in the trans-cover in a place similar to where the shifter would go on a manual. That way there is a direct linkage connection to the shifter on tranny. There are still issues i need to think through though.
1) Can I actually mount it where I would like to?
2) How tall should I get? I really like the look of the double bends, but think they may be too tall.
3) B/U lights and Neutral Safety switch. How do I get those to work?
4) Gear indicator. Can I rig the one in the dash to work, or do I need to figure something else out?
Unfortunately, I think I may have to just go buy it, try to install, then work through complications 1-4 as I go along. Alot of potential to be a $300 boondoggle.
Cheap auto floor shifter route. Get one from an aerostar. It is cable driven and has the shift indicator. It is a perfect height in the truck. About twenty bucks in the junkyard.
