The threads on my steering shaft of my 78 f-150 are damaged. Does anyone know what size die I am going to need. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix the problem I am open. I measured the radius of the shaft, and it looks to be about 8/16s, is this correct?
Thanks for your help!
Vince
PS. These threads are the ones that hold the nut which holds the steering wheel in place.
You can buy a re-threading die to fix the threads. Sometimes it is necessary to use a small file in onder to get the die to start properly. Take your time.
A thread file will probably work the best as the threads are more than likely to be damaged on the end which makes it impossible to start a die on straight unless you fix the damaged threads first.
If you've never seen one they are about 3/8" square and 12" long with each side and each end set up for different thread pitches. (8 thread pitches per tool, make sure you get the standard not metric thread) Just match up the ribs on the file with a good section of the threads and work your way into the damaged part.
Just my 2¢
