Rear end question

Trying to save some money and I have a complete rear axel that cam on the 55 f100 I think it's the 8.8 I have a 9 inch housing but no center section. Can the old one be built up to stand the power of a beefed up 429. Or qmi I just going to blow it up and then decide to run the 9???

If it is an 8.8, it's not the original rear and has likely been swapped out fairly recently. It should be plenty strong to do what you're going to do. If it's the original Dana 44, it's still plenty strong, but the 3.92 gears inside will make freeway driving a little tough. But off the line, you won't be beat. Find out what you really have and then decide what you want out of your truck.

Like said you need to know for sure what you have then decide. You will probably never get enought traction out one of these trucks to break any of the aforementioned rear ends so it should not matter which you use. I currently run 3.89 gears in a 9".

its cant be an 8.8, but if it was it would be plenty strong enough.

I have an 87 lincoln 8.8 behind my 435hp 460..

The guys are right, the 7.5/8.8 rear ends didn't show up until the late 70's. All it shares in common with the original Dana 44 is they both have a removable back cover plate.

It wouldn't be the first time a seller mis-represented a truck.

I'd start with the rear end you have. Unless you're trying to roast your tires it will hold up ok.....and give you time to build the 9" as a replacement.
