Edge Evolution Programmer

The truck I just got has one of these chips in it - it has 3 programs - no idea how it is currently programmed. What are your opinions on these?? I drive mostly highway, will not be towing anything real heavy ( 2 horses max and hay/wood).

I plan on messing it with this weekend (assuming truck is not back at shop ) is it worth reprogamming or should i just go back to stock? I am far more interested in MPGs than more power or towing capacity. I am averaging about 15 MPGs right now, with mostly highway driving and not going hard on the gas.

Thanks!

My truck came with one too. Everyone here and I will basically agree a DP tuner or custom tunes is the way to go if you want good power. I get around 15 city with me gettin on it in the extreme tune and i think i get the best mpg in that tune over race. Give it a try and see if you like it.

I have one of those as well, and I'm not real impressed with it. It does what the company says it will do, but if I use it in anything over the first setting, it overheats my transmission. I've done a bit of towing stock and never had any problems.

I'm also starting to notice some fluctuations in readings that aren't even possible, so I think something might be wrong with it (Year and a half old)

You'll find most of the guys on here recommend a good set of gauges and a DP tuner. I don't have one, but it's on my wish list.

I'm not trying to slam Edge, but I have found with research that they are not the chip for the 7.3. Again, that's just my opinion.

My truck also came with one. There is four settings:Stock, tow, race and extreme, with graduated h.p. increases. I left it on tow(60+ h.p.) except when in a shop for emissions testing, then I returned to stock. It malfunctioned, and Edge replaced it at no charge, even paying the shipping. I was pleased with it and it was easy to use. Then in June 2010, I had Jody of DP Tuner do live tunes. WOW! No comparison. My suggestion is to use it (never on extreme, seldom or briefly on race) until you can get what mods you want and then a DP Tuner.

I never had an Edge programmer, in reading the threads on here I was sold by the guys to go with a DP. My truck in its configuration in my sig. minus the tuner would get 15 hwy. They switched to winter fuels just as i got the tuner. On a 200 mile round trip on the 80economy with winter fuel at 72 mpg and cc set I got 14.9mpg. Hope this helps for some comparison.

bdave: did you keep the edge for the gauges and just use the DP for controling fuel?

My truck I just got also came with an edge evolution. It does help on power tremendously, but have heard some say it takes out tranny's and many seems so much happier with DP. The edge is a fairly clean install with the way it fits in the pod on the dash I'd like to keep it for the gauges and possibly get a DP down the road.

I compare the edge like my old superchip (black box) as far as the trans issues. I had found the only way it wanted to shift without destroying the tranny was near wide the f open. Yeah it addsdecent power but they leave out alot of much needed T/C lockup and shift point changes. I totaled that truck and it had taken the trans out in 110k. When I got my 02' I was given the newer Superchip (red) flashpak, it's a good fool proof tuner but not much power compared. I am about 2wks away from the DP, I need gauges first. Rule #1 don't add serious mods w/o being able to monitor the livelyhood of the mule.

Think I will be looking into the DP - I want this truck to LAST - I traded my 2008 to save money (hopefully) and get a little better MPGs (hopefully - I was only getting 12 )

I sure have a lot to learn - sometimes I wish I was like "normal" girls and liked painting my nails and luxury cars instead of horses and big trucks!

I'm not too familar with 7.3's, but I thought mine with the evolution shifts just fine, quick and firm. I don't know if the converter is locking up though, I've asked the question on other boards and no one can give me a test other than AE to determine if its locking up. 55mph, 3.73 gears, 265 tires is around 1500-1600 rpm, with those numbers the conclusion was that it is locking up. Truck only gets drove every other weekend (if that) so I do my testing on it when I can. It did seem like it had 5 gears which would indicate lockup working but I could never get it to unlock when in OD and lock back up. Using the OD off button on the end of the shifter seems would make it go strait to drive, click the button again and it would go strait to OD locked, would be nice to hear that drop in rpm from OD unlock to OD lock.

I've had an EE for the past 18 months. Also had 4 in exhaust and AIS put in all to get better mileage on my long hauls. Use Race mode with 4500# camper on. Just need to watch EGTs which it will allow you to set up to monitor. Have gotten better mileage and performance then stock program. It allows you to go back to stock for comparison and repairs.

I have the Edge Evolution, I keep it at level two. I have not had any shifting problems with my tranny. My truck seamed slugish when I got it and on level 2 it actually has some get up and go. Prob not the best one out there, but i got it off craigslist for 200 bucks and am happy with it. Im sure like the rest when my budget grows i will go with DP, but until then it works for me.

Not a fan of "tunes in a can" here. I'd get one written more for what I am doing as opposed to "one size fits all".

x2

This is SO true. If you like what it does, keep it. I personally want something different outta mine, hence the reason I'm going with DP.
