Heat question

My brother has a early 1999 2wd ext cab with the 7.3liter. He just called me on his way home from work and asked me "What does it mean when the heat just went from warm to blowing cold and I can smell antifreeze?" I said I'm not sure but I will ask. He mentioned that the engine temp gauge was steady in the normal range, but no heat and that lovely smell for several minutes and counting. He was about 5-10 minutes from home so i told him to keep and eye on the temp gauge and get it home.

My guess is he sprung a leak on a heater hose or the core itself and the core was emptying out. I told him when he gets home to check the floorboard for wetness and antifreeze and check the level in the reservoir.

Any other suggestions?

Okay, partially shredded serpentine belt took out the upper radiator hose. Easy fix.

Next question- He had the green coolant, can he just add the gold or some ELC or does he have to either flush it, or only fill it with the green?

You don't want to mix them. If he has an early 99 he should stick with the green coolant. Also, make sure he tests the SCA periodically.
