95 tranny slipping

95 tranny slipping
95 explorer w/ 195000 mi
just did a trans fluid and filter change fluid was very dark and pan was filled with a soot looking residue and magnet had a good 2-3 inchs of sludge stuck to it
the trans seems to slip while shifting form 2nd to 3rd it seem like the engine reves and then the trans grabs some time its hard some times soft and there is no pattern that it is following sometimes when i accelerate very fast it does it sometimes when im going slow it does it
just need a idea what it could be how can i trouble shoot it to pin point problem do i need to overhaul it or is it a valve body i have no idea where to look
