I just finished installing the factory cruise setup on my 78 f150 wiht a 460 with edelbrock carb. Put the rearend up on jackstands and turned the cruise on. The servo will not hold its position, it surges from wide open throttle down to idle then picks back up and does the same thing over and over. Any ideas what could be the problem? I have the vacuum hooked up to the back of the carb.
Are you saying you were "simulating" a driving condition while the rear end of the truck was on jackstands? That is NOT safe. I'm sure someone will fight me on that, but "I do it all the time" is not a logical argument.
Anyway, one of the inputs to the cruise control box is the speed sensor. The cruise control won't work under 35 mph or so (give or take). If you were just idling the engine, the cruise won't work, which would explain what you saw.
It works thats all I care about. Yes I was simulating a driving condition on jackstands and I was not just idling the engine trying to make the cruise work. It may not be safe, but I did it anyways.
