simple question

hello everyone, i will be buying my first diesel tomorrow morning and i have a simple question involving the gas mileage of the 6.0 diesel. Im not buying the truck for MPG's but i am just curious as to if the truck being 2WD or 4WD plays any role in MPG. My last two trucks were the same truck with the only difference being one was 2WD and the other 4WD and the 2WD did better on gas. Im wondering if its just a gas thing or if its the same for diesels. Ive read many great things on this site and decided to ask you all. thanks.

seems to make little differance. the thing about a diesel is weight is almost never an issue till you have a med sized trailer in tote. imo anyway.

As Cheeseit said,
4x4 has extra wgt to drag around and typically a higher stance which causes more wind resistance
and of course, there's the thing if u go off road or use low range and 4x4, there are more losses from lower gearing, etc...

All that assumes similar driving styles....
BUT, gas to deezle is much more of a variable...
all other variables being the same, deezle SHOULD get you higher mpg....

but who buys these big honkin' trucks for mpg

1. Anyone who has tried towing 10,000 lbs. with a gasoline engine.

2. I remember reading all the road tests on the 2005 F150 FX4. The F150 FX4 was a trim level like Lariat or XLT. All the magazines reported averaging 12 MPG. That was part of the reason I bought an 2005 F250 XL FX4. (The FX4 on the 250 was a skid plate & shock absorber option). A moderately optioned F150 FX4 cost as much as a PSD F250 XL FX4 with a few appearance options and every mechanical upgrade.

I got less luxury and more capability and much better mileage with the F250 at the same price

Although you will notice differences in MPG between a 2wd and a 4wd simply due to the mechanical differences and weight, another reason you may have noticed the difference bewteen your previous trucks is the gear ratio.

Perhaps you may take a look at your planned use and shop for a truck setup gear wise to give you the best combination of MPG and mileage.
