I don't know, guess I'm asking. I thought all motors had the hole. SD's are plugged. Both mine have one. '00 and '01. I know some use the hole as a turbo drain. Metric freeze plug, Ford part# F81Z-6026-CA

I don't have a clue to be honest. If it helps, the photo I posted came from my wife's 2000 truck. I'd go out and look at my '99 but it's hailing out right now....
mine looked like it didnt have a hole when we got it, it was full of oil and dirt so it was the same height as everything around it, but after i washed the valley trying to figure out the first leak, i discovered the hole it is plugged, but its one of the lowest spots in the valley so oil stays in it when there is oil in the valley tell i wash it out again.
sony cybershot dsc-t1 is the camera, got it for 20$ used, but since its so thin, i can slip it down into the valley so it is great for taking pics in there.
Some have the hole and some don't. I know my E99 doesn't have the hole. Doesn't seem to matter what year.
Was INTL supplying engines from two different plants?

Thanks for the tip. I probably should clean out the dirt in the valley a bit better and see if I discover that hole. I've been finding loads of dirt in the weirdest places on this truck lately...the lower cover of the under hood fuse box had about 1/4" of dry dirt. It just poured out like sand when I was accessing the wires. So I wouldn't be surprised to find a layer of dirt in the valley that is hiding stuff.
Have you checked your high pressure oil pump(HPOP) for leaks from the front?
what do you mean from the front? looking under the hood front of the engine?
im wondering if that hard line that goes to the back of the passanger head is leaking at the rear hard to tell everything seems to be wet on the pass side so, but 1 quart a tank of oil it uses, so i dont think i can see that little coming out.
That hard line is fuel supply. I hope you're no chasing an oil leak that is a fuel leak.
sure dont smell like diesel. looks pretty black to but i suppose thats from the yuk on the valley combined with the oil, because the oil itself looks decent.

Yeah, combined with your oil consumption - I think we are still looking for an oil leak. I can confirm that even a little diesel in that sludge will smell like diesel - not used motor oil.
A CLEAN valley will likely show ya exactly where its at. Your pics look oily EVERYWHERE, by narrowing that down to one area I think you'll find it pretty quickly. The plug on back of HPOP in my Excursion leaked for months - just a little. I looked several (dozen??) times and never could see it 'drip'. Finally, after a THOROUGH cleaning I saw the wet spot in valley and propped my eyelids open so I wouldn't blink - then I finally saw it leak. The valley has remained 100% clean and DRY since. Sounds like your leak is much bigger - it should be easier to find...
If ya put diesel in a spray bottle and degrease the valley, etc with that before Purple Power/Simple Green - you'll be able to eat out of there...

When you mentioned that fuel line I just wanted to make sure we were all on the same page. Hang in there, you'll find it.
As Jason pointed out the cleaner the area the easier it is to find the leak. His tip about using some diesel fuel as first step in cleaning is right on.
I always save the diesel fuel I drain from the bowl and use it to clean oil spots off the garage floor and the driveway.
ya its hard to clean it when its below freezing out, im gonna try maybe this weekend tho. i believe the oil is everywhere from driving around, splashing it front to back.
