So my buddy's boy calls me and says his ealry 99 just died the other day in the driveway and won't start. Him and his father have been pulling there hair out for the last two days... I told them I'd be right over. Walked up to the truck pulled the fuse for the fuel bowl heater/PCM and it was blown. I pulled one out of my glove box and presto, it starts right up!
It's funny, they thought I was some sort of powetroke god and I just laughed and said my knowledge about the 7.3 came from alot of people, some whom I've never met. So I say Thank You to everyone here who consistently provides solutions and explanations to our every day problems.
Have a great weekend everyone, I'm getting back to painting my intercooler pipes......
So, did you disconnect the fuel bowl heater wire and tape it off?
If not, you may be re-visiting that job, and won't look quite as God-like.
That fuse blew for a reason......
Besides the fuel bowl heater and coil for the PCM power relay, that fuse also supplies power to the Wastegate Control Solenoid, and the coil for the IDM power relay.
I was headed into Safeway when I heard some guy cranking and cranking his 7.3 and no start. I went over and offered my help and he said "I won't let anyone but a pro touch my truck" Poor guy didn't have enough sense to try and figure out if I had any. Some people you just can't help.
Pop,
I did in one way unhook the heater. I had him do it so he could get the feel for his engine. I figure no better way to learn then to get dirty yourself!!!

The good townspeople of Payson apparently don't know they have a resident pro already.

And he will "pay that pro"dearly to touch his truck.

He doesn't work at Coury.
Pop
That's right POP, Coury Ford. Coury has only owned the dealership for about three years. Before then it was Phil White going back quite awhile. I should be their special service writer and consultant for 7.3 repairs. HeHe
I consider myself a Pro-Am. I can work like a pro and have some pro knoledge, but get the pay of an amateur.

I pulled something simular the other day. Was crusing back from my parent's place and saw some people on the side of the road trying to get their car started. I pulled up and asked them if they wanted any help and they stated that they pulled out onto the road and it died.
So I pull up behind them, had them turn the key to listen to it and it sounded like there is no spark or fuel.
So I go back to the exhaust to sniff for unburnt fuel and have them turn the key again only I hear and see nothing from the exhaust. After getting a closer look I see that the exhaust pipe is FULL of snow. Packed with snow.
So I grab a screw driver and start chipping it out and they were wondering what I was doing. I said, "Chipping the snow out of your exhaust. The car can't breath, it's packed with snow and ice". Then someone spoke up and stated that the just backed into a pile of snow.
After chipping all the snow and ice out, had them turn the key again and WALLA, it started.
Funny how common sense on this site starts rubbing off because of all the troubleshooting we do and all the knowledge you guys have. Knowledge that you are kind enough to share with us!
Now, I have only had my 7.3 since May 2010, but I have read this site extensively and I can say I have a working knowledge of 3 out of maybe 10,000 topics on these trucks.......
That being said, my buddy has a loaner 7.3 from another friend, the truck is pushing 400,000 miles and we were hunting up at my place in VT this fall. We pick up diesel at a semi-questionable place and then a couple hours later the "Water in Fuel" light goes on. He starts worrying a little;
We get it back to my place (only a couple miles more), 10min on FTE, I log off and I go get a tin foil lasagna pan, throw it under the truck, climb on up, flip the lever on the fuel filter and let the crap drain........
He's like, what are you doing? "Draining the water from the fuel filter". So I show him how to do it........later on in the hunting trip it happens again (fuel was crappy) and he drains it himself a couple times, no worries, injectors saved, life is good......thanks to FTE.
The owner of the truck drives his other 7.3 with 200K on it, my buddy shows him how to drain it when he got some water going on......they think I'm a genius.......far from it...
My buddy called me the other day and and told me about how his truck wont start and how he and his friends have been trying to figure it out for a day or two. I gave him some simple to follow instrustions over then phone about disconnectiing the fuel bowl heater and replacing the fuse... He still asks me how i could have possibly known that, thast was the issue
