Sorry about the delay! It looks like you have an old T-Bird intake. The important thing is that it has tall runners for the early heads. In 1966, (cast-in number starts with C6) Ford reduced the size of the intake runners. The early intake will bolt on, but the runners won't match the intake ports on the heads.

Of course, there is always a variable, some later heads did have taller intake ports. Find out the casting number on the new heads before you get rid of the intake.

Here is a picture of an early head next to a late head. There is quite a difference between the intake ports!

66 and earlier 352 390 are internally balanced, 67 and later run a external harmonic balancer.

they all run a 2.02 1.55 valve size. also i think down to 64 (not including 64)

the heads are cc'd the same. even though the dish is slightly differant

the 66 heads tend to overhead the valves due to the smaller exhaustr port.

but thats only if you have hopped your motor up. 68 they opened up the the exhaust but closed the intake side.

also main think to check as they are pre hardened

check to see if any valve seats have sunk.

im not going into performance like the 390gt or the 428's etc

You are also able to swap top end parts between the 2, also if you feel up to it, you can gasket match the ports if you use a 66 and 68 heads. the internal ports are slightly different but you can still open them up.

intakes will swap also. bit as said by others before, runners dont match

i have done this before, but better said try to keep matched heads, and the intakes.

also if you going for a little performace, get rid of the factory intake. the cost of an aftermarket aluminium is well worth it.

with a aluminium intake a factory 390 weighs less than a 351W

also with flywheels and clutches the clutchesare differant, 390 clutch is slightly bigger, same flywheel

All 352/360/390/406/427 are internally balanced.

410/428 are externally balanced.

well i may be wrong, but both of my 68 390's have external harmonic balancers.

my 66 352 and 390 are internal

I will stand corrected, i acquired wrong information over time i see. the FE's are internal as you say

This is curiosity calling now, why the harmonic balancer external on the 68,

is the 66 just in the crank pulley? anyone know why the change?

They all have the harmonic balancer on the front.

The 410/428 are balanced at the back, at the flexplate or flywheel. The 428 SCJ has extra balance weights on the front, in addition to those on the back. I forget why that is, maybe the rods are heavier.

Yeah the SCJ's had the heavier LeMans rods that made it necessary to add the extra counterweight up front.

so earlier models the balancer was placed in the crank pulley instead of seperate pulley and balancer

that would explain why i thought wrong

I spose you could. While you are pricing stuff out, find out how much it would cost to have your current heads machined, using the parts from the reconditioned heads on the '68 block.

Myself, I'm cheap! I'd rather install one of these, with the exception of finding them local for $25: FORD FE INTAKE MANIFOLD - USED - eBay (item 190506027040 end time Mar-27-11 11:37:17 PDT)

The intake in my earlier post was installed on my '74, 390. It had good torque right above idle, and could breathe well enough to get me a speeding ticket in most any state. That is good enough for a stock build.
